In what was a blustery day in Rome, Ana defeated Svetlena Kuznetsova 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the 2nd round of the BNL Internazionali d’Italia. The wind did wreck some havoc, blowing clay all around the court, in what at times looked like a mini sand storm. Given the conditions, Ana’s performance today was pretty impressive.
Ivanovic’s forehand was clicking today, hitting an array of winners. Ana ended the day with 29 winners compared to 26 unforced errors. More importantly, Ana was a perfect 5 for 5 on break point opportunities, which is something she usually struggles with. All in all, a great first round victory over a former French Open champion.
Ana will get the day off tomorrow and await the winner of the Alberta Brianti/Silvia Soler-Espinosa match, which will be played on Tuesday. Ana owns a 2-0 record versus Brianti, winning 6-1, 6-2 in Carlsbad last summer. Also won their first meeting at the 2nd round of the 2009 Australian Open. Ivanvoic has never faced Soler-Espinosa. If Ana wins her next match, it will likely set up a much anticipated Ivanvoic/Sharapova 3rd round clash.
